How Can D-Link’s Smart Home Make Your Life Easier?

As a new contender to the market, the uptake on Smart Home devices is growing daily. Adopting this new technology allows you to choose new devices that give you significantly more control over how your home operates, increasing home security, safety and functionality, as well as saving you money due to decreased energy consumption and ease of general upkeep.

Furthermore, through the application of smart products, you can enjoy more control over your home’s functions from anywhere in the world, via your mobile device. Do you leave the house wondering whether you left your iron on? Did you remember to turn off your hair straighteners before you left? Did the children leave the lights on? Did you remember to close the back door on that balmy summer evening? Nowadays, you have no need to worry as you can swiftly power off various connected appliances in seconds, thanks to a smart home app on your mobile device.

With these advantages in mind, we thought we would highlight some benefits that you can take advantage of with our range of smart home products, which deliver new ways to gain more control of the new functions available for your automated home. To enjoy these, we’ve collaborated with the likes of Amazon’s Alexa range and If This Then That (IFTTT). Essentially, IFTTT is the language of the Smart Home, allowing you to build your own device ‘recipes’ to create interactions around the home. You can pair a range of our mydlink Home devices with other IFTTT enabled products and apps to do a wide range of really useful things around your home.

One truly exciting Connected Home enhancement we have made in recent times is the compatibility between our popular Wi-Fi smart plugs and Amazon’s Echo/Dot. This compatibility gives you an intuitive way to control your home simply using the sound of your voice. Plus, thanks to our compatibility with IFTTT, even if you don’t own an intelligent personal assistant, you have no need to worry; you can still set the lights to turn off automatically when you leave the house, or have the coffee maker turn on and make you freshly brewed coffee as the sun rises using your mobile.

Other significant advances have been made in security. With D-Link’s door and window sensors you will be alerted if you’ve left a window or door open. Installed alarms are also becoming a thing of the past now that motion detectors and a multitude of home security cameras can be linked and controlled from wherever you and your smart phone may be. In fact, security of your home no longer needs to be a worry and one quick and easy way to get up and running is with the Smart Home Security Kit. This clever bundle allows you to monitor your home from anywhere in the world, safe in the knowledge that your treasured belongings are being protected. Comprising a connected home hub, a door and window sensor, a siren and a monitor – all managed by the mydlink Home smartphone and tablet app – the kit provides fantastic peace of mind; it’s not just smart home technology, but smarter and now more secure home technology.

There’s really are no end of commands that can be actioned to ensure you make the most out of your D-Link Smart Home products, to make your life that little bit easier, more secure and much more reassuring.

Ensure you have fast Wi-Fi over the Xmas Period and make the most of your Xmas gadgets

Free-Wallpaper-Christmas-Tree.jpg

The router is the gateway to the majority of the technology you will have in your home. Quite a statement, but when you think of the way in which gaming for instance or the way in which we view television has changed it’s evident that in today’s society there is a large dependence on Internet connectivity to maximise the best out of your devices.

Over the Xmas period the demands placed on your network are likely to increase with everyone enjoying time off, for this reason it’s important that you are well equipped in order to deal with that demand, and this can be helped by purchasing a quality router. You could have the best speeds on offer from your Internet Service Provider, but if you don’t have a router that’s capable of utilising those speeds, it simply won’t matter. Like anything you need all of the components to ensure that it all works. And this applies when looking to achieve the best Internet speeds you can get in your home. If you’re an adopter of smart home technology it’s particularly important to make the investment, as more often than not the router provided by your Internet Service Provider is simply not up to scratch when it comes to multiple Internet connected devices throughout your home.

Luckily for you however, it’s not too late to ensure your Xmas gadgets run smoothly without the frustration of having to constantly reboot your Wi-Fi. D-Link has an extensive portfolio of products to ensure that you have an option available to you that best suits your requirements, from our more affordable EXO routers that offer speeds of up to 1300Mbps, right up to our high-end gaming routers such as the Ultra Wi-Fi router capable of speeds up to 3.2Gbps, D-Link has a router that will meet your internet demands and utilise the speeds on offer from your Internet Service Provider, allowing you to seamlessly connect more devices to the network, and still enjoy fast and smooth speeds.

If you’re lucky enough to live in a large home or would prefer a wired connection when gaming there are other connectivity products products that can assist you in achieving a reliable and fast network in your home. Wi-Fi range extenders and PowerLines for instance can be particularly useful in extending Internet coverage throughout your home. Wi-Fi range extenders are perfect if you have hard to reach areas in your home such as a garage or even some bedrooms where Wi-Fi will simply not reach, offering a potential solution in addressing Wi-Fi black spots.

PowerLines on the other hand are perfect if you want a wired connection to a games console or media streamer such as Sky or Virgin Media. These discreet devices plug into the router and then into the device in which you want a wired connection and from there you’re all good to go. PowerLines are quite literally plug and play and you can be up and running straight out of the box. They essentially offer a wired network as PowerLines send signals across a home’s electrical wiring, whilst this is not a new phenomenon standards have greatly increased in recent times, with PowerLines now capable of offering Gigabit speeds. D-Link offers two standards (500Mbps and a Gigabit) set at different price brackets so it’s dependent on your needs as to what you think you will require.

To ensure you have fast and seamless Internet throughout your home during the Xmas period, it’s important to invest in the Internet solution you have in your home, whether that involves purchasing a new router or investing in peripheral devices such as PowerLines or Wi-Fi range extenders.

In the lead up to Christmas, homes are more likely to be left unattended while parties are in full swing and the frantic rush to buy presents is underway.

D-Link’s top tips for faster Wi-Fi this Xmas season

In preparation for festive celebrations and gatherings, D-Link offers the following tips to supercharge your home network this holiday season:

Screen Shot 2016-11-22 at 11.44.01.png

  1. The router is the gateway to your smart home: Aging routers, or those provided by Internet Service Providers (ISPs), do not always deliver the strongest performance – especially as households add more connected devices. To improve home Wi-Fi, consider upgrading to a router designed to provide maximum performance for gaming and streaming HD media. The D-Link EXO router (Dir-869) router is equipped with advanced beam forming and band steering technology to create a high-performance wireless network designed to handle bandwidth intensive activities on multiple devices all at the same time.
  1. Location of your router is key: Have you ever tried to stream your favourite TV shows in bed, but been annoyed by poor Wi-Fi signals? Position the wireless router strategically to ensure it’s operating at its full potential to enjoy a tech friendly holiday. Tips include:
  • Keep it central – placing your router in the most central location as possible is a key consideration. Consider mounting the router on a wall, in a corner by the ceiling, or upstairs since radio waves typically spread out towards the ground.
  • Reconfigure the antenna – Positioning the router’s antenna vertically for the signal to reach wide, so the antenna is standing straight up. Many antennas can be adjusted and lie horizontally, but standing straight up is generally the ideal position.
  • Wireless interference – Household items like Bluetooth devices, microwaves, TVs, and cordless phones are pumping out radio signals that can interfere with Wi-Fi network signals. If you have to put a router next to a microwave, upgrading to a dual-band router like the D-Link AC1900 Wi-Fi router provides the ability to connect devices to the standard 2.4GHz band or less crowded 5GHz band, decreasing interference.
  1. Eliminating Dead Zones: Wireless dead zones have been around as long as Wi-Fi routers, especially in large homes. With the push of a button, the N300 Wi-Fi range extender (DAP-1365) grabs a router’s Wi-Fi connection and sends it to every corner of the increasingly connected home. The DAP-1365 also features a Smart Signal Indicator to help find the best location for optimal Wi-Fi coverage throughout the home.
  1. Creating a guest Wi-Fi network: The last thing hosts’ want is guests bothering you all night for your Wi-Fi password. Instead, create a Guest Network that allows visitors to connect to a dedicated Wi-Fi network without affecting the devices on your private home network.

To alleviate Wi-Fi dead zones and buffering headaches, D-Link is giving away home networking gear to help people stay connected this holiday season.

Caught on camera – avoiding the holiday blues

The holiday season is upon us, and soon we will all be locking up the house, leaving a note for the milkman and inevitably forgetting our toothbrushes. Some things never change, but thankfully with the latest camera technology, worries about your property and possessions while you are away could be a thing of the past.

According to recent research 63% of UK consumers were most worried about their neighbours when they were away from home.  But on a more serious note, 80% thought that the cost of home security was too expensive.  Fortunately, the latest home monitoring cameras, advances in mobile technology and the ubiquity of internet connectivity, has meant that home security is becoming more readily attainable for a lot of people.

Today’s IP cameras are extremely cost-effective and simple enough to use that anyone can set up CCTV security in their own home.  Better yet these cameras sit on your home network and can be viewed remotely from anywhere with an internet connection.  Indeed, 61% of consumers said they would feel less worried about their property and possessions if they were able to view them remotely over the internet or on their mobile phone.

So as we move further into the internet age hopefully more people can start to enjoy their holidays.  No longer should you need to worry about whether the TV is still in the living room, the car is still in the garage or whether the neighbour has remembered to feed the cat!
